Back in the summer of 2004, Google forced uproar within the
internet community. Thousands were affected by having been
dropped from the search engines totally and some even
experienced being banned by the Mega-Search Daddy.

Well, like all quakes there will be tremors to follow. According
to Google’s latest shake is the filing for a US patent
20050071741 on March 31, 2005. And, again this time the shake
will prove devastating for some unsuspecting long term
grandfathered sites.

Not only has Google made it apparently clear that it will
eventually “flush” the old to invite the new but, Google has
also revealed its criteria on what was acceptable and not
acceptable with the current linking strategies commonly used.

Since Google has largely focused on their new algorithms that
effect linking, there are a few things you should know.

1.Reciprocal links will now only carry weight towards page rank
if the link is relevant to the theme of your site. In other
words, if your site is about cookbooks, don’t get caught linking
back to a site about gun cases. That might be tempting if you
have a page that displays recipes for venison but, Google will
probably not make the connection.

2.Links either back linked or forward linked are now given a
history data algorithm. This means that old or stale links that
have not been maintained as fresh and updated information will
be penalized. Dispose of broken or dead links. Rotate newer
updated links to the top of their perspective categories within
your linking directories on a monthly routine bases.

3.Anchor Text now has its own score as well. When reciprocating
links it is no longer acceptable to Google to have too many
backward links using the same key phrase. This is now considered
“Anchor Spam”. Vary your anchor text using several different
pertinent key phrases matching the theme of your site.

4.The use of Third party Link Exchanges are now under their
radar. Make sure your Link Directory is hosted on your server
and not by a third party. All links should be relevant to your
site theme. Organically grow your link directory; using
artificial link injection will get you flagged.

Let me ask you a question… How do you get hundreds, or even
thousands of targeted sites to point their traffic directly at
your website? There are a few steps that you can take…

Step 1: Research your linking prospects.

Who would you most like a link from? Surf teh Net for a websites
that deal directly with your target market and collect the
personal contact information for the website owners. You should
collect these information:

- The website’s URL

- The address of the web page on that particular site where
you would most like a link

- The name of the website owner

- Their e-mail address

- The date you visited their site

- A brief description of what site is about

Step 2: Organize your list into table or database.

This is very important. By setting up a simple database right
from the start, you will be able to merge the information you
have collected into template letters, and keep accurate records
of exactly who has linked to you and who hasn’t.

If you have Microsoft Access you can easily set up a tracking
form or you might also be able to set up a database table in
your word proccessing package.

Step 3: Rate your prospects and divide them into 2 lists.

As you collect information on sites that you would like to
solicit links from, be sure that you divide them into two
separate lists:

- First list. The short-listed site

Your first lsit should be a list of those sites that you would
most like to obtain a link from. They will usually be highly
targeted and be a common meeting ground for your Ideal
Customer.

- second list. Sites of secondary interest

This second list sites will still related to your target market,
however they’re either not as focused or they have low traffic
counts. While links from secon list sites can still be very
valuable, chances are they’re not worth the same amount of time
and attention your Short-Listed sites are. Your second list will
likely be quite large.

Step 4: Write a personal e-mail to your first list.

Once you’ve collected the personal contact information of sites
that you would most like a link from, you can then sit down and
begin writing each individual site owner a request for a link
exchange. The letter should include…

- A positive comment about their website

- A brief description of who you are and why you’re
e-mailing them with an emphasis on the “win-win” nature of your
proposal

- Specific details about how a link to your site will
benefit their visitors/customers/subscribers

- Where on their site your link would be of greates benefit
to their clients

- A brief discussion about how they can link to you that
make it extremely easy

- Your contact information

… and anything else you believe might help you to get the link.

Step 5: Write an e-mail to your second list.

When you contact your second list, you should be just focused on
making your e-mail personal… the more personal the better.

With that said, because you will have more second list names
than first list names, you won’t be able to spend as much time
individually crafting each and every e-mail. Your best bet is to
develop a template letter that you can “plug” the site
information into. This can still come off as very personalized,
but you shouldn’t be quite as worried about making it incredibly
site specific.

Step 6: Be persistent!

If a site that you really want a link from doesn’t respond to
your initial offer, e-mail them back. Tell them how this is a
mutually beneficial way to do business. Tell them your market
research has shown that your customers have direct interest in a
product or service like theirs based on their interests. And
remind them again that their customers and subscribers would
probably be interested in the information that you provide at
your website because it’s going to help them in some way.

Emphasize again thet this is truly a win-win situation for both
of you.

It’s extremely important that every link request you e-mail is
personalized. Like I’ve said before, sending a personalized
“Dear Joe” e-mail as opposed to a generic “Dear Friend” or “Dear
Everyone” e-mail increases the response by a drastic 64%!

The easiest, most cost-effective way I know to personalized
“link exchange requests” is by using a software called
“Mailloop” to merge the personal contact information you
collected (i.e. e-mail addresses, website titles, URLs, names,
dates, etc), into a custom e-mail.

site will aid promotion through the Search Engine rankings and,
hopefully, draw some traffic of it’s own.

After directory submission, writing articles is probably the
next best free solution. Some may even say it is a better
proposition. Now, with all the article submission sites around
why would you need to consider a niche article site?

The answer is very similar to the advantages of finding niche
directories. Visitors to niche article sites are looking for the
specific content found there and are more likely to follow the
link in your article than if they found it a general article
site.

interesting content there that is growing daily which attracts
search engine visitors. A great many of these people are likely

locate other quality sites that will increase your link
popularity. Try to find sites that are in some way related to
yours, so not only will your link popularity increase, but your
customer base may also be expanded. You want to avoid your
competitors and look for sites that are useful to your site’s
visitors. Let’s look at the Alpaca Wool site example. Linking up
to a site that sells knitting supplies would be helpful to your
visitors, and the chances of the knitting supply site wanting to
link up to your site are also greater. By linking to a related
site that will be relevant to your website’s traffic, you are
increasing both of your site’s business prospects - and both of
your sites’ link popularity.

Not all sites want to link to other sites, so you will have to
do some research when you are looking for possible linking
partners. Google is an excellent starting place for your search.
Make sure you enter keywords that you think quality customers
will also enter to find your own site. Remember, your criteria
are quality, highly ranked, non-competing websites that have a
links or resources page. Go to these sites and objectively
assess them. Look at the quality of the product, the graphics,
and the ease of use. Then check out the other sites they are
linked to, and determine if your own site would fit in with the
crowd.

When you decide you have found a good prospect, you must set out
to woo them. The first thing to do is to add a link on your own
links page to their site. This is an essential first step; it
shows good faith, and ups your chances significantly of their
reciprocity. After you have added their link, you must contact
the webmaster of their site. Since this is almost always done by
email, you want to make sure it is immediately clear that your
message is not junk mail. This requires that you tell them right
off the bat that you have added a link to their page on your
site. A hook like this almost always insures the reader will
read on.

Next, be sure to be flattering and let them know how much you
appreciate their website. Make sure you emphasize that you have
actually visited their site, and that their site is not just a
random pick. Give them the address of your links page, and ask
them to check out the link for themselves. It’s a good idea to
mention that they will not only benefit from the increased
traffic your website will direct their way, but you will also
increase their link popularity. Briefly, explain why link
popularity is so essential, but do this in a sentence or two so
you don’t sound like a professor! Finally, tell them you would
greatly appreciate if they would reciprocally add a link on
their own links page to your website.

Go through this process with as many appropriate sites as you
can find, bearing in mind the criteria of quality and
non-competitiveness. After you have emailed all relevant sites,
be sure to check these website frequently to see if they have
added a link to your page. Give it about a month, and if no link
appears, try another charming email. Then give it another month,
and if your site is still absent from their links page, it’s
time to remove their link from your own links page. The only
time you want to pursue a link further than this is if you
believe a site is crucial to your link popularity and your
business needs. Just remember to keep all your communications
complimentary and cordial.

Then set up a schedule to check your ranking in search engines
frequently to see if your link popularity has improved. This is
not achievable in the blink of an eye. It will take some time
and a good deal of work. There is no way around the
labor-intensive quality of improving your link popularity, which
is why search engines regard it with such importance.

By the way - make sure you have a beautiful, streamlined site or
you will never persuade anyone to link up to you. Be prepared to
keep plugging away at this process, as long as it takes, until
you achieve link popularity stardom!
